The Carroll County Emergency Services Training program started its 2019 to 2020 on September 3, 2019. Over the last six weeks, students have been participating in classroom lectures and beginning the hands-on practical skills associated with the firefighter one program. The students learned how to don personal protective equipment (PPE) and self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). They then moved into ropes and knots, learning how to secure tools and prepare a hoseline to be hoisted up a ladder. After several days of practice, students moved onto ladders, learning how to carry, deploy, and climb safely. With the help of Tower 3 from Westminster, students were able to demonstrate the skills they had acquired thus far by climbing the 105 foot aerial ladder in preparation for the next lesson on ventilation. Students have discovered a very valuable lesson when it comes to firefighting, it is a team effort and no one person can do it alone.
The EST program is offered each year to interested high school seniors from Noon until 3pm each day during the school year as part of the concurrent enrollment program. Students can receive credits toward graduation as well as college, upon successful completion of the program. Volunteers who are free during the day are also welcome to join the program for any or all of the offered classes.
