In May of 2025, Dr. Jen Anders of Johns Hopkins Hospital was pleased to present Kenna Roberts with a “Right Care When it Counts” award for her outstanding composure during a medical emergency at her home.

On December 20, 2024, Kenna (Age 8) was home with her older brother while her parents were out. Her brother tripped over a safety gate, falling and striking his head on a wall and became unconscious. Kenna immediately dialed 911 to request help.

Following the instructions of the 911 call taker, Kenna was able to determine that her brother was breathing but remained unresponsive. Kenna remained on the phone providing all the information the 911 center needed to get the right help to Kenna’s home.

EMS arrived to find Kenna by her brother’s side where she was able to describe very critical health observations including a reliable period of her brother’s unresponsiveness which was vital for her brother’s care. With that information, the EMS personnel were able to make rapid care decisions that resulted in transport to John Hopkins Pediatric Trauma Center.

It was noted how Kenna had kept her composure to provide accurate information that resulted in a positive outcome for her brother during his medical emergency.

This is an example of why it is so important to teach your family how to get emergency help and the need to be prepared with details that can help EMS personnel when they arrive.

During the June meeting of the Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Services Association, Second Vice-President and Carroll County Pediatric Champion Susan Mott was pleased to present a proclamation to Kenna for her outstanding actions in the face of an emergency. Kenna received a standing ovation from the fire department leaders in attendance. Kenna wants to become a neurosurgeon, and we look forward to her achieving that goal.
